February 1944. Stalin deports all Chechens and Ingushes to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Siberia, in retaliation for their three year insurgency. December 1951. Mairbek is born in eastern Kazakhstan to Chechen parents. In 1957, the deportation order is repealed. Ten years later, Mairbek and his family moves back to Shali, Chechnya. July 2012. Mairbek travels back to Troitskoye, Tekeli and Karabulak, the villages of his youth. He had not set foot in Kazakhstan in 45 years. This is the story of his journey.
